Thomas Jefferson Gardens will host a Cemetery Walk in the Jefferson Municipal Cemetery Sunday, Sept. 19, with Mike and Dianne Piepel as guides.
The walk will begin at 2 pm at the Welcome Center at Thomas Jefferson Gardens. The Piepels will describe highlights of the walk, such as unusual headstones, the type of stone used, and the symbolism carved on them.
The group will then travel (by foot or by car) east to the municipal cemetery, where a short narrative history of prominent and interesting persons buried at the cemetery will be given. Attendees are invited to bring a lawn chair and drinking water for the walk.
The Cemetery Walk will include the headstones of
- Julien Geneva, builder of the present day courthouse and 1926 high school;
- John Gray, farmer and tiling expert and an officer during the Civil War;
- Mildred Culbertson, whose headstone was imported from Italy;
- Yankee Robinson, owner of one of the largest circuses of his time;
- William Anderson, one of the first pioneers to Greene County;
- Hall and Mary Turrill, superintendents of schools whose headstone is unique; and
- Mahlon Head, who established the first bank in Greene County and was elected as the first mayor of Jefferson.
