Memorial Day services told

The American Legion and the Department of Defense request “This Memorial Day Americans pause to remember the brave men and women who have given their lives in defense of our nation, from the Revolutionary War to the worldwide war on terrorism.” 

Scranton Township Cemetery at 9:45 am

Memorial Day Services will be held on Monday at 9:45 a.m. at the Scranton Township Cemetery. Al and Cheryl Robson have headed up the committee in planning the event.

Guests will be welcomed, followed by a prayer given by Tim Robbins. Jefferson Boy Scout Troop 534 will raise the flag and lead the guests in the Pledge of Allegiance. The Greene County Marching Band will play The National Anthem. Clay Peters and Avery Bardole will sing patriotic music followed by the address by Maddie Truitt. All are Greene County High School students. 

Veterans in attendance will be recognized. The band will conclude the program with patriotic music followed by Taps. The roll call of names of those buried in Scranton Cemetery since Memorial Day 2019 will be read as a final tribute.

For guaranteed, comfortable seating, bring your own lawn chairs. In case of bad weather, the service will be held in the Scranton Community Center (gynmasium).

St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Jefferson, 9:30 am

A joint VFW / American Legion firing squad will salute fallen heroes while Taps is played. The graves will be blessed.

Jefferson Municipal Cemetery, 10:45 am

The Jefferson fire department will raise the American flag and the Lindsay Medal of Honor flag followed by a performance of patriotic music by the Greene County High School Band. Pastor Chad Cummings of Gospel Open Bible Church will give the invocation. Mike Bierl, Greene County veterans affairs director, will present the Memorial Day address followed by the National Anthem played by the band.

The ceremony will conclude with a salute to fallen heroes by the joint VFW / American Legion firing squad followed by Taps. Pastor Cummings will give the benediction. 

Churdan 8 a.m. Mass; 9:30 am service

St Patrick Historic Church, rural Churdan, will conduct mass at 8 am, followed by a military service at St Patrick Cemetery.

A military service is scheduled at Highland Cemetery in Churdan at 9:30 am with music provided by the Town and Country Band. 

Rippey Services, 11 am

Kinkead-Martin American Legion Post #583 will perform a ceremony at Bowers-Angus Cemetery at 10 am, then Old Rppey at 10:30 am. They will conclude the services in the Rippey Cemetery at 11 am. 

Mary Weaver will welcome guests. Pastor Catherine Stokes will provide the remarks. Wyant Jungck will read In Flanders Field. The laying of the memorial wreath will be conducted by Sharon Ulrich. A 21-gun salute is planned by the Legion. Addie Burkett will perform Taps. 

A free-will lunch will be served at the Rippey United Methodist Church after the ceremony at the cemetery.

Richland Township Cemetery, St Mary’s  Cemetery and Franklin Township Cemetery

The Jamaica American Legion Paul Johnson Post 687 will conduct services at Richland Cemetery at 9 a.m.; St Mary’s Cemetery north of Jamaica at 10 am followed by Franklin Township Cemetery at Cooper at 11 am.

Dillavou Cemetery at 2 pm

The annual Memorial Day service at the Dillavou Cemetery north of Ralston will be held  Monday at 2 pm. The guest speaker is a representative from Kindred Hospice who will honor all veterans in attendance. 

Bring your lawn chairs. In case of rain or high winds, the service will be held at the Ralston fire department building. 

Pleasant Hill Sundaes on Sunday, May 30

Social time, including ice cream sundaes, will begin at 5 pm  on May 30 with a memorial program following at 6 pm. The program will feature the Town and Country Band, local talent and a sing-along. Pleasant Hill Memorial’s annual meeting will also be held.

Pleasant Hill Memorial is located at 1794 Redwood Avenue, southeast of Jefferson off County Road P-30.  All are invited to attend.
