Scranton library news

The library is officially open to the public without an appointment or calling ahead to let us know you will stop in. We are still not offering in person programming at this time. It is very nice to see more people coming back into the library. Please wear a face mask when coming to the library – if you happen to forget, we have some face masks available inside the front door.

We will continue to wipe down library materials that are returned before they are re-shelved and wipe down frequently touched areas in the library often. We are also going to continue the curbside delivery option for those patrons who would prefer to get their library materials in that way.

This is a great time for everyone to take a look and see if they have any library books/movies at home that they can drop off at the library or in the drop box behind the library. If you aren’t sure if you have any materials out, or you want to make sure that you have rounded up all of your items, please call the library and we would be more than happy to get you a list of your check-outs.

This week (April 4-10) is National Library Week, and the theme this year is “Welcome to Your Library”. This is a perfect opportunity to let us know what you think of our library and what it means to you or your community.

We are also encouraging families to go through the Story Walk at the Gazebo Park in Scranton.

This Story Walk was sponsored by the Scranton 5-2-1-0 grant from the Iowa Department of Public Health and the Iowa Healthiest State Initiative. This story links to the 5-2-1-0 message by helping to promote healthy eating (trying to get in five fruits or veggies a day). When you are done with the Story Walk, please take a minute to scan the QR code on the last sign. This will take you to the Facebook event page for the Scranton Story Walk where you can comment with how many people completed the Story Walk and what your favorite part was. We would love to see how many people enjoyed the Story Walk while we have it out this week.

As always, follow the Scranton public library Facebook page, check out or website at www.scranton.lib.ia.us, or check the Scranton Journal for updates on the library’s news and events. ~ Wendy Johnson, librarian

National Library Week , April 4-10, 2021

This week, April 4-10, is designated National Library Week by the American Library Association. Aren’t you glad we have that attractive little library on the main street of our small town?

We’re glad to be able to have regular library hours on six days each week. And now, after many months of limited access due to Covid, the library is now fully open. Stop in any day during regular library hours to browse the collection, see what new books have arrived, etc.

This week, we have a request: If there is something about our small town library that you particularly like, Let the library know. That is, if you see something you like, say so.

You like e-books? Magazines? Public access computers? Computer games? Library special events? Finding the latest books written by your favorite author? And, for the library user, it’s all free. You know, tell us stuff like that.

How to tell us? By phone: call the library at 712-652-3453 and tell the library staff what you like! Email librarian Wendy Johnson at admin@scranton.lib.ia.us. Send a message on the Marchant Memorial Library’s Facebook page. Stop by the library and tell us something in person. Or, drop us a US Mail note to Marchant Memorial Library, 1110 Main Street, PO Box 68, Scranton, IA 51462. However you communicate, we’d love to hear from YOU about what you love about your local library. We will compile any responses we get and find a way to communicate those “likes” back to you. Thank you.

One additional note: Are you interested in being of service to your local library? If you would at some time like to serve as a library trustee, or serve on the Friends of the Library/Library Foundation board of directors, please notify the library staff. Current library trustees include Carlie Coffin, Dustin Gustoff, Bob McKnight, Molly Ritter, and Cheryl Robson.    ~Cheryl Robson, president, Marchant Memorial Library trustees, courtesy of The Scranton Journal
