After going the entire 2020 season without outdoor track and field, Ram girls coach Derek Merk enjoyed being with his team Monday night at the Greene County Early Bird meet. “It was a lot of fun getting to watch them finally compete outdoors after almost two years,” the coach said.
Rams Brooklyn Olson and Brianna Osterson started the 2021 outdoor track season with first place finishes in field events at the March 29 at Linduska Field in Jefferson.
Olson heaved the shot 37’ 9-1/2 inches and the discus 114’ 3” on the warm but very breezy afternoon.
Osterson leaped 16’ 1” to win the long jump.
Osterson also ran the final leg of the first place 4 X 100m relay. The team of Olivia Shannon, Natalie Heupel, Makala Kafer and Osterson ran the relay in 54.18 seconds. Kafer, Shannon, Natalie Heupel and Katrina Heupel put together the winning distance medley relay with a time of 4:49.40.
The sprint medley relay team of Annie Twillie, Alexa Peters, Natalie Heupel and Shannon placed third in 2:00.61. Kafer, the two Heupels and Osterson placed fourth in the 4 X 400m relay with a time of 4:42.85. Twillie, Kelsi Miller, Gretah Johnson and Shannon took fifth place in the 4 X 200m relay with a time of 2:05.02.
In individual races, Kafer placed second in the 200m dash with a time of 30.10 seconds. In the 100m dash, Twillie placed third in 14.72 seconds and Peters finished fourth in 15.2 seconds. Osterson placed fourth in the 400m dash in 1:08.47.
Coach Derek Merk said he was “extremely pleased with how the girls performed and support one another.”
“The younger girls (freshmen and sophomores) impressed me with their ability to get the baton around the track. Our seniors did a great job assisting the younger ones in getting ready for their events, identifying proper lane assignments, and exchange zones. Great team effort all around,” the coach continued.
