Ram McKinley Robbins places first at state wrestling tournament

Greene County can boast a wrestling champion following Saturday’s state tournament in Des Moines. McKinley Robbins maintained his undefeated season with a 7-5 victory in the Class 2A 120-pound final. 

Robbins, the tournament second seed, opened his championship quest with a 9-4 decision over Dawson Townsend of Davis County.

 In the second round, Robbins posted a 2-1 victory over Jonathon Burnette of Spirt Lake Park. The sophomore then defeated Keaton Zeimet of Central DeWitt in a 4-2 semifinal match. Zeimet finished the tournament in third place.

The finals saw #1 Robbins against #2 Blaine Frazier of Notre Dame/West Burlington/Danville. Frazier reached the finals on two major decisions and a 6-1 decision. The lead went back and forth with Robbins holding a 7-5 lead late in the third period. He held off Frazier’s desperate advances as the clock ticked away.

Robbins finishes his sophomore season 34-0 and becomes the fourth state wrestling champion in Ram history. The last was Will Thomsen in 1994. Robbins finished the 2020 state tournament as second at 106-pounds.

Senior Brady Stauffer lost his first match at 138-pounds in a 5:10 fall to Brady Ortner of Vinton-Shellsburg. He fell in a 13-5 major decision to Staveley Maury of West Delaware in the first round of the consolation bracket, ending the his season at 27-7.

Gavin Scheuermann fell in 1:23 to Nick Fox of Osage and 7-1 to Logan Jones of Central Decatur in the 145-pound division. Fox ended the tournament in second place. Scheuermann ends his freshman campaign with a 17-11 record.

Sawyer Schiltz was pinned by Aaron Graves of Southeast Valley in 59 seconds. He was pinned in 5:09 in his consolation match by Skylar Young of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. Graves placed fourth in the 285-pound class. Schiltz capped off his senior season 25-11.
