The Ram baseball team finished the opening week of its season with a 1-2 record overall and in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference after a 4-3 loss to PCM in Prairie City Friday night, but won Monday to improve its record to 2-2.
Senior Wes Tipton pitched, striking out three batters and walked three. He allowed no earned runs.
The fifth inning started with the Rams up 1-0 and ended with the PCM Mustangs up 3-1. The Rams tied the game 3-3 in the sixth inning. The Mustangs’ final score was scored on a two-out double in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Ram junior Jordan Challen had two singles and junior Dylan McConnell had one single. Junior Colton Fitzpatrick and sophomore Tyler Beger both had a run batted in.
The story was different when the Rams handed Colfax-Mingo a 10-0 loss via the 10-run rule in Jefferson Monday evening.
The Rams scored a run an unearned run in the first inning. The Rams held the Tigerhawks scoreless, and then scored nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The game ended then with one out by the 10-run rule.
The finals scored came on a three-run double by junior Riah Nelsen. Beger scored three runs and got one RBI. McConnell hit two singles and had a had a run-scoring ground out. Junior Alex Rasmussen hit a single and got one RBI, while junior Jordan Hostetler got an RBI on an infield single. Tipton doubled and sophomore Daric Whipple singled once and walked twice.
Fitzpatrick pitched a three-hit shut out. He struck out five batters, walked none and hit none. He is at 2-0 on the season.
After Monday’s game Greene County is 2-2 overall and in the HOIAC.
