Ram boys win three on the hardwood

The Greene County boys’ basketball team tallied three victories last week, topping Woodward-Granger 66-59 in Woodward Monday, Jan. 18. They defeated South Hamilton 50-47 Tuesday in Jefferson on a last second three-pointer by Bryce Stalder and defeated Perry 71-38 on Thursday in Perry. 

The Rams finished the week 2-4 in Heart of Iowa Conference standings and 4-8 overall.

Saturday, Jan. 23, Greene County traveled to Gilbert for their boys’ basketball shootout. The Rams drew Grandview Christian, a 12-1 team that is ranked ninth in Class 1A. Greene County couldn’t match up with the powerful offense and board domination of the Thunder. Grandview Christian posted the win 83-40.

Rams 66 ~ W-G 59

Greene County led Woodward-Granger by five points, 17-12, at the end of the first quarter. The Hawks took over the lead in the second period to go up 30-28 at halftime. The Rams fought back, posting a big second half and outscoring WG 38-29 for a 66-59 win.

Two Rams had big hoop nights with Bryce Stalder stroking 29 points and Richard Daugherty, 20. Stalder hit four baskets behind the arc and Daugherty made five. Worth Henry was high man for the Hawks with 12 points.

Zach Goff pulled down eight rebounds and had five steals.

GC made 26/61 field goals for 43 percent and 5/9 at the charity stripe for 56 percent. The Hawks hit 21/47 for 45 percent and 11/16 free throws.

Rams 50 ~ SH 47

South Hamilton exploded in the first period to take a 17-6 advantage over Greene County. The Rams were down 23-6 before putting any points on the board in the second quarter that ended with a 25-14 Hawk halftime lead.

A 20-point Ram barrage in the third quarter closed the gap to two, 36-34. The Rams made free throws in the closing stretch while SH did not. The game was tied at 47 with about 15 seconds left. The Hawks missed two free throws. The Rams rebounded, missed a shot, got the offensive rebound and found Stalder open on the far wing for the winning shot.

Stalder finished the night with 16 points. Daugherty added 14 points, including four treys. Jackson Morton pulled down five rebounds and Daugherty had four steals. Carter Hewitt was high for the Hawks with 14 points.

The Rams made 17/57 from the field for 30 percent and 9/12 behind the free throw line for 75 percent. SH ruled the boards, grabbing 38 rebounds while the Rams grabbed 22 caroms. They had 13 turnovers to South Hamilton’s 22.

Rams 71 ~ Perry 38

Greene County took the early lead over Perry 13-8 and built a 31-17 halftime lead. The Rams blasted the game wide open in the third as they poured in 35 points to take a 66-26 advantage at the end of three quarters.  They went on to win 71-38.

Stalder and Daugherty again joined for the winning combination scoring 50 of the team’s 71 points. Daugherty had 26 points and Stalder added 24. Daugherty hit three treys and Stalder sank 10 free throws. Max Riley crashed the boards for eight rebounds. Daugherty grabbed seven boards and seven steals.

GC made 25/60 field goals for 42 percent and 16/22 from the charity stripe for 73 percent. They garnered 36 rebounds and committed 12 turnovers.

GVC 83 ~ Rams 40

The three-point shot eluded Greene County Saturday against Grandview Christian as the Thunder rolled to an 83-40 win in Gilbert. Unable to get inside due to a tall GVC lineup, the Rams trailed 20-5 at the end of the first period. The Thunder ruled the boards so there were few second chances for the Rams. GVC hit 11 three-pointers while Greene County ended with four. By halftime the Rams were down 41-15. The continuous clock rule went into effect late in the third quarter that ended 63-28.

Stalder topped the Rams’ scoring column with 10 points. Brayden Roberts tallied seven, Caden Telleen, eight, and Max Riley, six. Stalder had the team high four rebounds and three assists.

Greene County made 15/49 from the field with four treys for 30 percent. They hit six free throws, grabbed 22 rebounds and committed 16 turnovers.

The Rams were scheduled to travel to Prairie City-Monroe Tuesday and host West Marshall on Friday. The Saturday game with Roland-Story has been postponed. The girls’ game is still planned to take place.
