Football practices for the Greene County Rams started Monday, Aug. 10. All practices and games are dependent on the Covid-19 situation.
Districts were reassigned this spring and will be active for this year only. All schedules were shortened to seven games, five district and two optional. All teams will enter playoff competition, beginning Oct. 16.
Greene County will compete in Class 2A, District 9 against Atlantic, Clarinda, Des Moines Christian, Red Oak and Shenandoah. They are led by second-year head coach Caden Duncan.
The Rams had an excellent 2019 season, going 9-2 with losses to OABCIG in the regular season and to Algona in the playoffs. The team has a lot of slots to fill, losing its quarterback, top rushers, receivers and kicker to graduation.
Juniors Bryce Stalder and Joe Carey took some snaps under center last season. They will be in the running for the quarterback position.
Four of the Rams’ top five rushers graduated, leaving senior Cameron Miller with the most experience in the rushing offense. Jaxon Warnke is back for his senior season as a receiver. Stalder and fellow junior,
Jackson Morton also have good hands.
Top defenders returning are Morton and junior Brayden Smith.
Kicking specialist Cael Fisher graduated, leaving junior Nathan Black to fill that position. Black kicked off four times and had 14 punts last season. He and Warnke were the top kickoff and punt returners.
