In the neighborhood

August 3, 2029

Alan, Sarah, and Kale Borgeson hosted a birthday/college graduation party for Kane Borgeson on Sunday evening. Joining this special occasion were Jenna Beyers;  Kane’s grandparents, Al and Ann Frederick and Jean Borgeson; his uncles and aunts Bill and Melissa Frederick, Leah and Kathryn; Bret and Liz Pierce, Laura and Allie; Mary Hinton and Taylor as well as  Michael and Robert Borgeson.

Good food plus great entertainment watching the little cousins play and lots of laughter from the older folks completed this special evening.

On the Rippey library shelf – Iowa has a colorful history from early days including the Underground Railroad in Iowa noted in an early book, Necessary Courage and another new book, Iowa Confederates in the Civil War by David Connon. There were a number of slave owners living in Dubuque before the Civil War.

Seventy-six men connected to Iowa fought for the Confederacy or worked in the government. Their experiences included disease, imprisonment, desertion, and other adventures.

In the fall, Conon will present a program under the sponsorship from the Greene County Historical Society and the Jefferson public library and in the connection with the Iowa Humanities program.

Check out the book from the Rippey library and other new books. Copies of the Iowa in the Confederates books will also be available when Conan shares his program. ~by Nancy Hanaman

Books, computers, DVDs and so much more – The Rippey library monthly board meeting was July 27.  Welcomed to the board were new trustees Elizabeth Blakeman, Kyle Mowrer, Dee Ann Thompson, and Jess McKim, who was unable to attend. We discussed several new ideas and goals for the library.

I have ordered some more books. One is about John Lewis. Another one by Curt Warner tells about their family’s struggles with autism. We really have a lot of new books available to check out. A lot of the books have gone out right away, but there are still a lot to choose from.

We had our Bubble Parade July 29 at 10 am.  It was moved to the park. There were 24 children and adults in attendance. It was a nice summer diversion.

Thanks to board members, Brenda Roberts, Lyle Rychnovsky, and Cindy Devilbiss for leading this. The children received book, bubbles, bookmarks, and another toy. Some were things Brenda had planned to give out at Summer Reading, which may not happen.

All six Greene County Libraries were able to enjoy this program, thanks to the funding of the county supervisors to the Greene County Library Association.

On September 17 the G.C.L.A. and the Greene County supervisors will sponsor the Greene County Reads. This year the book discussion will be the beloved classic Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. Jan Scharingson will be the discussion leader.

There will be more information, but the Paton library, Grand Junction library, and the Jefferson public library will host this event. Contact your library for the link to the virtual Zoom discussions if you don’t feel comfortable going to an in person discussion.

One person at each discussion will win a copy of Little Women! Contact your local library for more information, register to attend a discussion, and check out a copy of Little Women or related book or movie. ~by Phyllis Bardole, librarian
