The Greene County Rams girls track and field team won the title at the Class 3A state qualifying meet Thursday in Atlantic. Nine Greene County events qualified for the state coed meet at Drake Stadium May 22-24, with at-large qualifiers not yet named.
At the state qualifying meets, the first two place finishers in every event go on to the state meet, with the rest of the spots filled by ranking times or distances across the state. As of Thursday evening, a total of 15 Ram events had qualified for the state meet.
First place finishers were Allison Higgins in the 3000 meter run with a time of 11:11.97; the shuttle hurdle relay (Eme Johnson, Nadia Fisher, Sarah Sandage, Kate Sandage) at 1;07.81; And Olivia Hansen in the 200 meter and 400 meter dashes, with times of :27.25 and :60.88 respectively.
Second place finishes came from Fisher in the high jump at 5′ 0″; Kate Sandage in the 100 m hurdles at :15.72; Johnson in the 400 m hurdles at 1:08.30; Higgins in the 1500 meter run at 5:12.34; and the sprint medley relay (K. Sanage, Emma Saddoris, Hansen, Emily Christensen) with a time of 1:56.04.
On the boys side, at least six Ram events qualified for the state meet with first or second place finishes.
Roman Phillips won the 100 meter dash with a time of :11.10 and the 200 m dash a tie of 22:53. The 4 X 100 meter relay (Max Neese, JC Weitl, Dylan Hamilton, Phillips) won with a time of :44.88.
Second place finishes were earned by the 4 X 200 meter relay (Neese, Weitl, TJ Lint, Phillips) with a time of 1:33.10. Alex Rasmussen placed second in the discus throw with a distance of 155′ 3″ and in the shot put with a throw of 45′ 7-1/2″.
Team scores for the girls were Greene County 135, Glenwood 124, Harlan 120, Carroll 97, Winterset 76.5, Creston 74, Denison-Schleswig 69, and Atlantic 43.5. Kelly Simpson coaches the girls team.
Team scores for the boys were Glenwood 139, Carroll 11, Harlan 113, Greene County 91, Creson 63, Winterset 57, and Atlantic 48. Dean Lansman coaches the boys team.
