Rippey woman killed after swerving to avoid striking an animal

A rural Rippey woman was killed in a one vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon south of Rippey. The accident was reported to the Law Enforcement Center at 2:43 pm.

According to the report at the Greene County sheriff’s office, Joyce Roberts, 79, was northbound on County Road P-46 (V Ave) between 340th and 330th St when she apparently swerved to avoid striking an animal in the roadway, possibly a deer. She drove toward the east shoulder, over-corrected and crossed the centerline, then turned again and entered the east ditch, where she struck a culvert. Her vehicle came to rest on its wheels north of the culvert facing east.

The accident report noted the deputy arrived at the scene at 3:00. Roberts was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, nor did an airbag deploy. She was not ejected from the vehicle. Greene County EMS personnel found Roberts to be dead at the scene.

Damage to her 2003 Mercury Marquis was estimated at $5,000.
