Combine a shared interest in gardening with a lawn location not suited for grass and the result is a lush shade garden at the home of Collette and Jim Unger at 1218 Rush Ridge Road, the June 2019 Jefferson Garden Club Yard of the Month.
The couple worked this spring to plan, prepare and plant the new garden in front of their home filling it with a variety of hostas and other shade loving plants which are flourishing in the location. In sun drenched beds around the home, the Ungers have nurtured treasured blooming perennials including peonies, coreopsis, spiderwort and iris which happily thrive with a smaller area for herbs and tomatoes.
For the Ungers, owners of the home since 2003, the “yard of the month” designation especially fits as they have developed flower beds on all sides of their home. A wide array of plants with sun-part sun preferences have been used, some with “roots” going back to family members’ homes decades ago. The gardens’ plants are obviously a labor of love which the Ungers gladly divide and share with others.
