The sky is the Limit for fun at the Jefferson Public library this summer for teens and ‘tweens. The Teen Summer Reading Program begins June 13 and runs through Aug. 1. Teens in grades 6-12 are invited to participate. Students should visit the library any time to register and pick up reading logs.
This year’s theme is “A Universe of Stories” and includes lots of theme-related activities, so teens will learn more about astronomy and outer space. The national theme celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing in July of 1969.
At the first meeting on Thursday, June 13, teens will receive an activity packet to complete over seven weeks, filled with fun theme-related activities like word searches and writing a story about a robot or space aliens from another planet. After that, participants will meet each week on Thursday afternoons from 2:30 to 4:30 to play games and make crafts.
Readers will also meet on three Tuesday afternoons for movies and popcorn.
Drew Sorenson will set up his telescope for an evening of stargazing with the teens and they’ll learn about Iowa astronauts Loren Shriver and Peggy Whitson.
It’s not rocket science – the library is a great place for teens to hang out with their friends or make new friends this summer! They’ll test fly paper airplanes, have fun with stomp rockets, try out some new makerspace gadgets, learn about constellations and planets, footprints on the moon, and enjoy snacking on astronaut food, likeTang and Moon Pies. Do you remember Tang and moon pies?
It all happens at the library and teens can count on water balloons, hangman, and something glowing in the dark, too. “Join us at the Jefferson public library for a summer filled with a Universe of Stories,” a library spokesperson said.
