NOTICES –
Another planning meeting for Rippey’s 150th birthday will be held Sunday, May 19, at 2 pm in the community center. Everyone is welcome to attend and be a part of the planning for the sesquicentennial which will be held June 27, 2020.
The Rippey library board will meet Monday, May 20, for its regular meeting. Note the change of date due to Memorial Day being on their regular meeting day.
RIPPEY ALUMNI – Rippey Alumni and friends will meet Saturday, May 25, at the United Methodist Church in Rippey for their annual gathering.
The meal will be served at 12 noon by the Rippey Methodist Church kitchen crew. The meal is always delicious. Please pay at the door rather than sending money in advance. Reservations are necessary and should be made as early as possible. Mary Ann Young Miller graciously volunteered (again) to take the reservations by phone at 515-465-2449. There is an answering machine in case she is not home. Her email is ptmilleria@q.com.
After the meal an informal business meeting will be held in the sanctuary. Please be thinking of new officers because there will be an election. Mary Fry Liebich will lead the meeting this year.
The class of 1959 will be recognized with Lynn Wilson speaking on behalf of his classmates. If there are any classes that are having reunions, please let the committee know before the meeting, so you can be recognized, also.
Sunday church services are at 11 am and Memorial Day services at 11 am at the Rippey Cemetery. Also, once again, the loving members of what many of us claim as our “home church” will serve a lunch following the Memorial Day services. It’s a great place for family and friends to enjoy visiting after the weekend events. Hope to see you at the gatherings!
RIPPEY LIBRARY
~by Jean Borgeson, Rippey library trustee
After a few weeks recuperating, Phyllis is back in the routine of “learning the ropes” of her duties as librarian. Even though the weather may not indicate, summer will be upon us soon. Many libraries across the country will celebrate space exploration in their summer reading programs. This year’s slogan “A Universe of Stories” was chosen by library professionals to help libraries offer children of all ages an incentive to keep reading throughout the summer, therefore avoiding the “summer slip” parents and teachers know so well, come fall.
Plans are being formulated for the Rippey Library summer reading program and volunteers will be needed. If you can help, you are encouraged to talk with Phyllis.
We have a mystery benefactor! Recently, five donated books were in the drop box. Clearly, they were left by someone who either liked to quilt or enjoyed children’s stories with a quilting theme.
No Dragons on My Quilt by Jean Ray Laury, with Ritva Laury and Lizabeth Laury, is a story of a boy, his grandmother and a special quilt, plus full-size patterns for making the quilt. The Quilt Makers Gift, by Jeff Brumbeau and Gail de Marcken, is a fable that celebrates the joy of giving. It’s about a generous quilt maker who gives away the quilts she makes.
The Quilt Makers Journey, a prequel to the The Quilt Makers Gift, also by Jeff Brumbeau and Gail de Marcken, is about the value of generosity and spirit of community in a young girl’s life. Papa and the Pioneer Quilt, by Jean Van Leeuwen follows a young girl who chronicles her family’s journey through the making of a quilt, as they travel the Oregon Trail in 1853.
The last book, The Quilt-Block History of Pioneer Days, by Mary Cobb, illustrates traditional American quilt-block designs that were created to reflect daily life and special events of pioneer life. Simple craft projects are included. A big thank you to our unknown giver!
I’ve always enjoyed watching the quilt makers in our community and while I will never be one, I admire those who can create and finish the beautiful creations.
