Bardole family applies for CAFO permit

County supervisor Peter Bardole included

In many parts of Iowa county residents know spring is on its way when the county board of supervisors starts receiving applications for permits to construct confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs).

In Greene County one of its own supervisors filed the first application of the year. Supervisor Peter Bardole is applying for a permit along with his father Roy Bardole, his brother Tim Bardole, and his nephew Schyler Bardole.

The proposed CAFO is in Section 5 of Washington Township, about two miles southeast of Squirrel Hollow county park. Two swine finishing barns measuring 277 X 71’2 wide would have 8-foot deep concrete manure pits under them. Listed capacity is 4,999 head of swine.

The master matrix submitted with the application scores 535 points, one of the higher scores in recent years. A minimum of 440 points is needed for approval.
The supervisors have made it clear they like to see landscaping and a closure plan included. Bardole Finisher scored points for both items in its master matrix.

The complete application is on the Greene County website. The supervisors will hold a public hearing on the application Monday, Feb. 25, at 9:15 am. Written comments can be sent to the county auditor’s office at 114 N. Chestnut St in Jefferson until the hearing.

Peter Bardole lives in Supervisor District 5, which is entirely within the Jefferson city limits. His farming interests are in Washington Township in District 4.
