Jefferson-Scranton second graders were able to earn an invitation to a “Minute to Win It” party hosted by their teachers on Monday. Fifty-nine of the 83 second graders competed in games that tested their toe dexterity, their aim, their steady hands and more.

The party was planned by teachers as an incentive for students to read and study spelling at home, and to responsibly return items to school. All teachers send books home each week to assure children have books at home at their specific reading level. Most teachers also send home spelling words. Teachers have set a three part goal for student: read 60 minutes each week at home; work on spelling words twice a week at home; and return their bags of books and reading logs each Friday so teachers can restock the bags over the weekend. Students had to meet all three parts of the goal for six weeks to be eligible for the “Minute to Win It” party.

This was the second incentive for the year. The first reward, a pajama party at school, was earned by about 50 students. Students who meet the goals from now until the Christmas break will enjoy making holiday crafts.
