The Relay for Life of Greene County will include a haircutting event for two – maybe more – persons who are donating their hair to Locks of Love.
Kim Bendickson (left) and Krystal Baugh (right), both of whom work at Home State Bank, will have Kayla Hamilton take her shears to their long hair in between entertainment segments. They’ll send their hair to Locks of Love, which makes wigs for children who have medical hair loss.
Bendickson is a second time donor. She donated her hair about 20 years ago. “It felt like it was time to do it again,” she said.
Home State Bank employees have rallied behind co-worker Sharon Towers, who is battling cancer. Team Towers is the bank’s Relay for Life team this year. Bendickson said Towers is only one of the people she thinks of when she supports Relay for Life. Her mother and mother-in-law are cancer survivors; her father and father-in-law died of cancer.
Baugh is a first time donor. She will be honoring her mother, who died of cancer 10 years ago.
Both women said that it is their choice to drastically change their hair style, while cancer patients, many of whom lose their hair as a side effect of chemotherapy, don’t have that choice.
Hamilton will be available to cut other donors’ hair Saturday.
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Greene County will take place this Saturday, April 26, from 9:30 am to 2 pm at the Greene County Community Center in Jefferson. Entertainment will accompany the barbecue from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm.
Proceeds from the Relay for Life support the American Cancer Society’s efforts to provide support to cancer patients and their caregivers, advocate and educate about cancer, and fund cancer research. The impact is positive on all Greene County residents who are touched by cancer.
