P-C students meet Acton via Skype

Paton-Churdan middle school students had a morning Skype session with the owner and creator of Matchstick Marvels Museum, Pat Acton.

Patrick Acton was born in Greene County and raised on his family’s farm near Rippey.  After he graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1977, he moved to Gladbrook with his wife April, and soon began experimenting with matchstick models as a hobby.

He recently retired after nearly three decades as a professional career counselor at the community college district in Marshalltown.  He is now self-employed as an artist, making matchstick models full time.

During Makerspace time, Paton-Churdan middle school students have studied about Acton following his passion and have even tried their hand at making their own matchstick creations.

“This was an awesome way for middle schoolers to personally get to know him, ask questions, and learn more about his amazing talent before we visit the museum in Gladbrook on May 18th,” a school spokesperson said.
