Special school election April 1 part of reorganization process

Voters in the East Greene and Jefferson-Scranton school districts are asked to go to the polls April 1 for a special election required by the coming reorganization.

On the ballot is a revenue purpose statement to authorize expenditures from the state 1-cent sales tax for schools, service and use tax funds. The EG and J-S districts have the revenue purpose statements in place already, but a statement must be put into place for the new Greene County district.

According to the revenue purpose statement, the funds can be used for property tax relief; building and/or remodeling school buildings; purchasing or leasing equipment; unexpected repairs due to natural disasters, or to respond to changes in demographics that require new construction or improvements; establishing and maintaining pubic recreation places and playgrounds, recreational activities or community education; or payment of principal and interest on general obligation bonds issued for school infrastructure.

Those are the same purposes listed in the current J-S and EG revenue purpose statements.

Polls will be open from noon to 8 pm. Voters in the East Greene district will vote at the St Brigid Parish Center in Grand Junction. Voters in the former Jefferson Consolidated district will vote in the south assembly room at the courthouse in Jefferson. Voters in the former Scranton Consolidated district will vote in the “new” Scranton city hall.

Absentee ballots are available in the Greene County auditor’s office at the courthouse during regular business hours, 8 am to 4:30 pm.
