The Greene County boys basketball team avenged a four point loss on their home court to the South Hamilton Hawks in December with a six point win over the Hawks in Jewell Friday. It was the first home loss this season for the Hawks, who brought a 13-1 record into the game.
The score was tied at 17 after eight minutes of play. Midway through the second quarter the Rams were ahead 33-25, but the Hawks tied the score at 35 to end the first half. The Hawks scored only eight points in the third quarter to the Rams’ 21 points, giving the Rams’ a 56-43 lead. Ram fans couldn’t relax, though, as the Hawks whittled the deficit to two points, 64-62, with less than three minutes to play. The Rams held a two-possession lead with 40 seconds to play, and with 18 seconds to play the Hawks were down only three points, 81-78. The Rams scored the last three points for a final 84-78 score.
Three players accounted for 66 of the Rams’ points – senior Trey Tucker scored 25, junior Wade Adcock scored 21, well ahead of his 12 point average, and sophomore Trey Hinote scored 20 points, including four 3-point shots. Senior Thomas Jacobsen and sophomore Lance Hughes scored eight each and senior Calvin Skalla added two.
The Rams shot at 86 percent from the floor in the second half and were at 70 percent for the game. They shot at 78 percent from the free throw line. The Hawks shot at 62 percent from the floor and 67 percent from the charity line.
The Rams and the Hawks now have two Heart of Iowa losses each, with the Rams at 9-2 and the Hawks at 10-2.
The Rams host PCM in a make-up Mega Night Monday night. It will be the first meeting of the season for the Rams and the Mustangs. The Mustangs got their third conference loss Friday at the hands of the Gilbert Tigers. The boys game will begin at 7:30 pm.
