Letter to the editor – Karen & Allen Shannon

To the editor,

9,720 minutes.  What is that?  Greene County Intermediate building dismisses at approximately 3:07 pm to bus students to Jefferson. This is 18 minutes earlier than the 3:25 dismissal at the elementary.  Over the three academic years that our two daughters will attend GCI (if the bond does not pass) they will each miss this much instruction time:

9,720 minutes of missed instruction time, which equals 162 hours, which equals 20.25 school days which equals approximately 1 month of school.

Yes, 9,720 minutes is instruction missed due to busing. It is hard not to wonder what more students could learn in those missed minutes, and is yet another reason we will be voting YES on Sept. 13 for the school bond.

(Wednesday’s are obviously not 3:07, but are approximately 18 minutes sooner than the elementary building also.)
