The congregations of Central Christian and Christ Lutheran Churches in Jefferson broke up the winter doldrums last month as they stuck it to each other in some friendly rivalry. The result: 738 glue sticks for local children in need.
Pastor Bill Bernau of Christ Lutheran initiated the challenge when Adopt-A-Family asked for 650 glue sticks to help youngsters stick to their studies the rest of the school year. He suggested a 325 glue stick goal, with the first congregation to meet the goal being treated to donut holes by the other.
The pastors mobilized their flocks via Facebook. “The Christ Lutheran pastor will never let your pastor hear the end of it if we don’t win the challenge. Game on, Pastor Bill,” was posted by Pastor Deb Griffin of Central Christian. He answered back with a post to the Christ Lutheran Facebook page, shared with Central Christian, “California! Central Christian has glue sticks coming from California. Rise up, Lutherans….we need glue sticks this Sunday!”
Pastor Deb replied, “Disciples, it sounds like he’s shaking in his boots. I would be, too, if I was him…” and she added that she had already written her glue stick victory speech.
By the end of the week, both congregations had surpassed the 325 mark and the pastors both purchased donut holes, most likely sticky ones, for their congregations.
“It was a tasty treat for some sweet people who care deeply about the needs of our community,” Pastor Deb said.
The rivalry was, of course, friendly, with the pastors probably the friendliest of all. They’ve been stuck on each other since their marriage two years ago.
