Ram softball season ends with 4A Region 7 loss

Blue Jays 13, Rams 7 in Perry

The softball season ended for the Greene County Rams with a first round 4A Region 7 loss to the 15th ranked Perry Blue Jays in Perry Thursday. The Jays outscored the Rams 13-7 in a game that was played early to avoid predicted severe weather.

Perry held the lead the entire game, scoring a run in the first inning and two more in the second before the Rams put up a run in the top of the third inning. The Rams scored four runs in the top of the fourth and were up 5-3 when the Jays went to bat in the bottom of the fourth. The host Jays’ three runs put them up 6-5. The score was 7-6 for the home team after five innings, and a powerhouse sixth inning sealed the win for the Jays. The score after six innings was 13-7; that score held for the final score.

Ram junior Hannah Promes threw the first 4-2/3 innings. She allowed eight hits and four of the Jays’ runs with Promes on the mound were earned. Freshman Jenna Beyers took the mound in relief of Promes. She walked four batters in the fifth inning and totaled seven walks on the game. Beyers as tagged with three hits and eight runs (six earned). Promes struck out one batter; Beyers struck out three.

Promes was assigned the loss and finished the season with a 13-12 record. Sophomore Samantha Hardaway in six appearances, including four starts) had a 2-2 record on the season. Beyers had no starts, six appearances, and a 1-0 record.

For the season, Promes had 74 strike-outs and 34 walks. Hardaway had 16 Ks and 12 walks, and Beyers had 10 Ks and 16 walks.

Senior Carleigh Paup homered for her fourth time on the season, and freshman Megan Durbin hit her fifth homer. Senior Sydney Koch hit a double. Promes and eighth grader Tieryn Tucker also got hits in the game.

After consecutive state tournament appearances in Class 3A, Tom Kennedy’s Rams finished the 2016 campaign with a 16-14 record. The team batting average for the season was .301, with Paup leading the effort at .446 and Carey at .429.
