The Greene County baseball team went 2-1 in action last week. The Rams defeated North Polk and South Hamilton but lost to Roland-Story.
Greene County has three regular season games remaining: July 5 with Ogden; July 7 with South Central Calhoun and July 13 with Saydel. Class 3A tournament pairings had not been announced at press time.
The Rams have a 9-15 mark overall and are 1-8 in Heart of Iowa Conference action.
GC 5 ~ North Polk 4
The Rams fell behind North Polk but rallied to defeat the Comets in eight innings on June 27. NP scored two runs in the first frame. They added two runs in the fifth while GC pushed their first run across the plate for a 4-1 NP lead.
Greene County scored three runs in the seventh to tie the game at four. In the extra frame, the Rams pushed a single run across the plate to win the game.
Branden Miller drew a bases loaded walk to drive in Tyler Beger with the game winning run. Beger reached on an error and advanced to third on a NP throwing error on an errant pick-off attempt.
The Rams tied the game with three runs in the seventh. Tom Gannon was hit by a pitch to start the inning, but after two strikeouts, he remained at first. Wade Adcock blooped a double for runners at second and third. A wild pitch made it 4-2 and Austin Delp walked. Calvin Skalla drew a walk to load the bases. Pinch hitter Ben Wilkens came through with a run scoring single to make it 4-3. On the play, the left fielder overran the ball, allowing Delp to score the tying run.
Miller drove in the first run for the Rams with a fifth inning single with two outs.
Freshman Austin Delp allowed four runs on ten hits (three earned) and struck out two batters in seven innings on the mound. Wade Adcock picked up the win by hurling the eighth frame. He retired the Comets in order.
Adcock had two of the five Ram hits with one each for Logan Lansman, Miller, and Wilkens.
GC 8 ~ S Hamilton 4
The Rams started strong and never looked back by scoring four runs in the first frame against South Hamilton . The Hawks scored a run in the third. Greene County pushed three runs across the plate in the sixth for a 7-1 lead and added an insurance run in the seventh. SH tried to rally, scoring three runs but it was too late, falling 8-4.
Beger threw all seven innings for the victory. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits, two walks and struck out six batters.
Chase Stoline had two hits and three stolen bases. Gannon slapped three base hits and earned an RBI. Reid Lamoreux and Delp each had two hits with Delp picking up an RBI. Both swiped an extra base. Miller was credited with three RBI and one base hit. Skalla picked up two RBI with a single.
R-S 9 ~ GC 2
Roland-Story defeated the Rams by a 9-2 score on Thursday night. Adcock was the starting and losing pitcher. He gave up all nine runs; five were earned. Adcock yielded six hits and walked five while striking three batters out. Delp threw an inning of relief allowing no runs on one hit and a walk. He fanned two batters.
The Rams only had three hits, all singles. Gannon had two hits and Miller, one. The Greene County runs scored on a passed ball and a wild pitch.
GC scored twice in the fourth after trailing 3-0 early. R-S kept the hits coming and the Norsemen scored four times in the fourth and added two more runs in the fifth.
