Scranton council works on budget, routine business

The Scranton city council held an hour long budget workshop on Feb. 11 with a second session scheduled for Feb. 18. Plans are to finalize the 2014/15 budget and hold the public hearing on Tuesday, March 11, at 6 pm.
During the regular Feb. 11 council meeting, Linda Hoyt presented the monthly library report. She discussed grant applications, Kids Fest planning and progress on the new library building.
Jerry Boyd gave the monthly water and maintenance report. He detailed water leaks and mentioned an increase in water pumped and unaccounted for water. Dawn Rudolph discussed the community center, giving the monthly report. Highlights included an update on programs and events scheduled, building maintenance and grant applications.
Ken Paxton gave the Greene County Chamber and Development report. He mentioned Home Base Iowa initiative, new website update, housing committee meetings, VFW and a reminder of upcoming dates on the proposed casino.
Council members Marilyn Jacobsen and Randy Winkelman reported on the streets and parks. Winkelman also mentioned the housing committee meetings he attended.
The council discussed kids’ fishing day. Leesa Squibb asked for permission to hold the event at Pond Park on Saturday, June 7, with a rain date of June 8. The council gave its approval.
The bid of $6,000 from Pemble Digging was approved for housing demolition at 403 Lincoln Street. A $250 donation was granted to New Opportunities. ~The Scranton Journal
