VFW tells local essay contest winners

Patriots Pen winnersWinners at Greene County Middle School in the Patriot’s Pen essay contest, sponsored locally by VFW Post 9599, have been announced.

Andrea Grundon (left)  won first place. She was awarded $100 and her essay will be forwarded to the state competition. Avery Bardole (right) placed second and received $50, while Cheyanne Ferguson (center) placed third place and received $25.

Each year, more than 125,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the contest. According to the VFW’s website, the essay contest encourages students to examine America’s history and their own experiences in modern American society. The students write an essay of 300-400 words which is judged based on knowledge of the theme, theme development, and clarity of ideas.

This year’s theme was “What freedom means to me”. The theme for 2014-15 was “What patriotism means to me”.
