The Scranton fire department battled a house fire Thanksgiving night for five hours. No one was injured in the blaze that caused substantial damage to the home at 1107 Lincoln St.

The home owner, Ben Smith and his family, arrived home about 6 pm on Nov. 27 and smelled smoke in the house. The Scranton FD was called and according to fire chief Doug Duff, the blaze had burned through the roof when the fire trucks arrived.

Duff reported the fire apparently started when ice caused the electrical lines on the back of the house to collapse, sparking the fire in the attic of the home.

Jefferson and Ralston fire departments were called to assist with mutual aid. The departments were on the scene until 11 pm. No one was injured but the icy conditions made for a miserable night for the volunteers.

Smith purchased the home in January of this year and had been working to improve the property. The roof and attic of the home were extensively damaged while the remainder of the home has smoke and water damage.
