This is Fair Week in Greene County

The plans have been made and everything is ready for the Greene County Fair in Jefferson this week. Entries began on Tuesday and continue through Thursday with judging, shows and activities scheduled Thursday through Sunday.

Headlining the entertainment this year is the country western musicians, Pat Waters and the Chainlink Band on Friday evening followed by fireworks; PPL Tractor and Truck Pull on Saturday evening and the Grand River Rodeo on Sunday. 

A favorite of all ages, Poppin’ Penelope will work the grounds showcasing her balloon and magic skills all four days, Thursday through Sunday. She will help host an outdoor movie Thursday evening.

Chris Camp, The Whip Guy will present shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. He amazes the crowd with his skills.

Mixed in between are activities including a scavenger hunt for grades 4-12 on Wednesday afternoon; barnyard games for all youth Thursday at noon; an extravaganza for children ages 3-10 Friday afternoon; trivia with Denny Lautner and queen contest Friday evening; baby contest Saturday morning; kids’ pedal pull Saturday noon; watermelon eating contest Saturday afternoon; tug of war Saturday afternoon and Monster Arm wrestling Sunday afternoon.

Judging of 4-H and FFA entries will be held, beginning with the dog show on Wednesday evening. The poultry show was cancelled by state officials due to the bird flu epidemic but youngsters will still be judged on their posters and other information on Wednesday.

Thursday brings the swine show, horse and pony show and rabbit show. Friday the sheep and goats take over the show ring. The beef show is Saturday morning with a horse fun show that afternoon. Livestock can be checked out on Sunday at 5:30 pm with the premium auction scheduled on Monday, beginning at 8:30 am.

Open class exhibit entries are accepted Thursday from 1 to7 pm. The exhibits will be on display Friday from 1 to 8 pm, Saturday from 9 am to 8 pm, and Sunday from noon to 4 pm.

Commercial exhibits will be on display Friday from 1 to 8 pm, Saturday from 10 am to 8 pm, and Sunday from noon to 4 pm.

There’s always plenty of good food at the fair and this year is no exception. The Clover Cafe is open all day Wednesday – Sunday and Monday morning. They have daily specials. The Kiwanis Cafe is located under the grandstand during the afternoon and evenings on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Greene County Cattlemen’s Association is grilling on Friday, starting at 5:30 pm. The Town and Country Band will entertain, playing the music that you know and enjoy. Saturday the Greene County Pork and Lamb Producers are grilling at 5:30 pm.

The annual pancake breakfast sponsored by the Greene County Chamber of Commerce is Monday morning at 7 am. ~The Scranton Journal
