Greene County residents can enjoy a mini vacation Tuesday morning without leaving home. Dozens of Lincoln Highway enthusiasts from at least 12 states and even Norway will pass through on the Lincoln Highway Association’s Henry B. Joy Tour. Visit with the drivers in Grand Junction or put a lawn chair under a shady tree along the road – the tour will mark the day as more than an ordinary Tuesday.
Vehicles ranging from a 1930 Ford Model A to a 2015 Corvette Stingray, with even a 1961 Rambler Classic in between, are part of the tour. The tour will overnight Monday in Ames and Tuesday in Omaha. A morning stop is slated at the Lincoln Highway museum in Grand Junction. The itinerary notes a photo stop at Moss Corner (north of Scranton), and the lunch stop will be at Woodbine.
Bob and Joyce Ausberger hand carried packets of materials about Greene County to the start of the tour. The packets were compiled by Greene County Chamber tourism committee chair Angie Pedersen as part of the Chamber’s ongoing effort to promote Greene County far and wide.
The Henry B. Joy Tour celebrates the 100th anniversary of Joy’s tour from Detroit to the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exhibition in San Francisco.
Joy was the first president of the Lincoln Highway Association and a major force in the success of the innovative trans-continental highway. He was also president of the Packard Motor Car Company. He supplied the original Lincoln Highway Association with official Lincoln Highway Packards, which were used by the Association on cross-country tours and reconnaissance.
The tour departed from the Packard Proving Grounds north of Detroit on Saturday. It will take 12 days to travel 2,836 miles to the Lincoln Highway western terminus in San Francisco, with arrival on Wednesday, July 8.
