HOIAC wins for both summer teams Friday

The Greene County baseball and softball teams both won Heart of Iowa games June 19. The baseball team topped the Collins-Maxwell Raiders 8-2 at Allensworth Field in Jefferson, while the softball team preserved its undefeated league record with a 10-2 victory over the PCM Mustangs in Monroe.

Baseball coach Mark Sawhill put senior pitcher Riah Nelsen on the mound and Nelsen improved his season record to 4-0 as he pitched all seven innings.

Nelsen struck out 12 Raiders and walked five. The Raiders managed seven hits, but all were singles. Nelsen allowed one earned run, his first this season. He helped himself as a batter, also, hitting a two run homer and two singles. He had four runs batted in.

The Raiders scored first and led 1-0 after the first inning. The Rams scored five runs in the third inning and two more in the sixth. Collins-Maxwell scored the last run in the top of the seventh inning.

The Rams had 11 hits for the game. Reid Lamoureux hit two doubles and Alex Rasmussen hit a double and a single. Daric Whipple had two singles, while Dylan McConnell brought two runs in with a single. Tyler Beger also had a base hit. Colton Fitzpatrick didn’t have a hit but was credited with an RBI.

Both teams had two errors and stranded eight runners for the game.

The Ram baseball team is 7-3 in the HOIAC and 9-7overall.

In Monroe, the softball team had 17 hits – 16 of them singles – in a 10-2 win. Emma Saddoris hit a double and two singles. Carleigh Paup, Kayla Mobley, Emily Christensen, Marissa Promes, Jenna Beyers and Bailey Godwin hit two singles each. Hannah Onken and Tressa Rasmusen  hit one single each. Counting RBIs, Christensen had three, Beyers and Onken had two each, and Paup, Mobley and Godwin had one each.

The Rams were up 2-0 after they batted in the fourth inning, but the Mustangs tied the scored 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth. The Rams came back with three runs in the fifth inning, two in the sixth, and three in the seventh.

At the pitching rubber Marissa Promes struck out eight batters and walked one. She gave up two earned runs and six hits.

The Ram softball team is 10-0 in the HOIAC and 15-2 overall. They play Saturday in the West Marshall tournament in State Center.
