Ram softball, baseball teams both get wins Wednesday

The Greene County Ram summer teams both won Wednesday night, with the girls going into extra innings to avoid an upset by the Colfax-Mingo Tigerhawks and the boys playing only six innings to claim a victory via the 10-run rule.

The softball team played the Tigerhawks in Colfax. The Rams were ahead 3-0 until C-M scored three in the bottom of the seventh inning, sending the game to extra innings.

In the top of the ninth Emily Christensen got on base with a two-out double. She scored on a single by pitcher Marissa Promes. The Rams were able to hold onto their one run lead as the Tigerhawks batted last. Christensen had two hits in the game and seven other Rams, including Promes, had one hit each. Christensen and Hannah Onken had RBIs.

Promes pitched all nine innings. She struck out seven batters, walked three and allowed four hits. Two of the Tigerhawks’ runs were earned. Promes is 12-2 on the season.

The Rams are now 13-2 overall and leading the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference at 9-0. Had C-M won, it would have been called an upset, as the Tigerhawks are 4-14 on the season.

The story was much different at Allensworth Field in Jefferson where the Rams hosted the C-M baseball team. The game was called after six innings with a 10-0 score.

Senior Colton Fitzpatrick threw a four-hit game with seven strikeouts and one walk. Of the hits, only one made it out of the infield. It was the first win of the season for Colton Fitzpatrick, who has pitched well previously but received little help from his teammates.

The Rams had 10 hits for the game. Alex Rasmussen hit two doubles and a single and got two RBIs. Riah Nelsen hit a two run double and a single, and Fitzpatrick hit a two run double. Jordan Challen and Reid Lamoureux both got RBIs off singles. Jordan Hostetler and Daric Whipple had one single each.

The Ram baseball team is 6-3 in the HOIAC and 8-6 overall.

Both teams play non-conference games Thursday, with the girls hosting Southeast Valley (Gowrie) and the boys traveling to Bondurant to play Bondurant-Farrar.
