Rams lose 6-3 to Gilbert in baseball

The Greene County varsity baseball team challenged Gilbert’s senior pitcher Evan Johnson but couldn’t put together a win as the Rams fell to the Tigers 6-3 in conference play in Jefferson June 5.

Johnson had allowed just two hits and struck out 22 batters in two starts this season prior to the trip to Jefferson. The Rams got eight hits off him as he struck out seven Rams, hit three with pitches and walked four. The Rams weren’t able to score easily and stranded 13 base runners during the game. The sixth and seventh innings both ended for the Rams with the bases loaded.

Ram senior pitcher Colton Fitzpatrick allowed six hits, all of them singles. He struck out three batters and walked four. The Tigers claimed a 3-o lead in the top of the first inning, combining four singles and three Ram errors. The Rams scored in the second inning after the Tigers put up two more runs (5-1), in the fourth (6-2), and in the fifth inning (6-3).

Seniors Dylan McConnell and Alex Rasmussen both doubled. Senior Jordan Hostetler had two singles and one run batted in, junior Daric Whipple had two singles and one RBI, and junior Tyler Beger had two singles.

The Rams are now 4-3 overall and 4-2 in the Heart of Iowa. The Gilbert Tigers are 7-2 overall and are at the top of the Heart of Iowa with a 5-o record there.
