Installation of first rooftop art under way

The first piece of rooftop art around the courthouse square in Jefferson will be dedicated and celebrated this Saturday, June 6. The colorful art, “Renewed Dreams” by Stephanie Hammond, is on the roof of Skeeter Creek Fabricators at 104 of E. State St. It will be easily visible from the top of the Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower.

An artist’s reception will be held from 2 to 4 pm at the top of the Bell Tower, with no charge for elevator rides. Free refreshments will be provided by Hy-Vee, and all visitors will receive a token gift to remember the day.

The project is spearheaded by Jefferson Matters: Main Street’s Tower View Team, chaired by Deb McGinn. “A View from Above” is the first project TVT discussed when Jefferson earned Main Street designation in 2012. Other projects have been completed in the meantime, like the Play Me Pleez piano on the Bell Tower Plaza two summers ago and Sally’s Alley, dedicated a year ago. Along the way, the TVT has worked through challenges of placing art on the rooftops of vintage buildings. McGinn told the Jefferson city council last week ” It’s an experiment. It might work. It might not. But you won’t know if you don’t try it.”

Rainy weather has delayed placement of the art. It was a “work in progress” as of Wednesday afternoon, with a large piece yet to be placed. Pictured are Paul and Adam Ogren at work.Rooftop art, June 3
