On Feb. 16, the Rippey library board of trustees hosted a reception for librarian Sarah Kilgore on her last day. Sarah resigned on Jan. 8, and approximately 15 well-wishers attended to wish Sarah a fond farewell. Board president Dale Hanaman and his wife Nancy provided the refreshments and board members Nancy Burrows and Jean Borgeson helped serve and clean up.
The board presented a gift card to Sarah and thanked her for her dedication and service during her time as librarian.
The library will be open as usual with volunteers. According to the state and city codes, the trustees have selected a librarian and will introduce the new librarian to the city council at its meeting on March 2. There will be cookies and drinks from Monday through Thursday for library patrons who wish to meet the new librarian. The trustees thank the city and community for their patience and cooperation during this transition.
Rippey Lions Club: The Rippey Lions Club welcomed a new member, Peggy Porretta, at its Feb. 19 meeting, following a potluck meal. Following a successful fundraiser serving food for the BRR ride on Feb. 7, the members voted to contribute to Camp Hertko Hollow for young people with diabetes, which occurs at a camp near Boone every year, and the Leader Dog for the Blind organization. Leader dogs are provided at no cost to persons who are blind and the program includes training for the dogs and instruction for the dogs and their new owners. This has been a program supported by Lions Clubs for many years.
Plans were made for the Mother-Daughter dinner on April 9 beginning at 6:30 pm. The community is invited to place used eye glasses and hearing aids in Lions Club boxes at the Rippey public library, the post office, Rolling Hills Bank, Peoples Bank, Sparky’s and the elevator office. These are collected and then later provided to those who need them in Iowa and around the world.

News in and around Rippey
Ben and Midge Vannatta visited the Bondurant Christian Church on Sunday, Feb. 8. Their grandson Jason Grow is the pastor of the church. Quinton Thomas, son of Jason and Lindsey Grow, was one of four babies that were dedicated during the worship service. There were 19 children who participated during the story time. The 10 members of the praise band, including Jason on drums and Lindsey playing her violin, furnished the music for the morning. Some of the hymns that were performed included, “Up to the Mountain,” “Did You Hear the Mountains Tremble,” “Days of Elijah,” and “Holy Ground.” After the services, the families of Jason and Lindsey ate at their favorite restaurant.
Jean Borgeson joined her sister and brother-in-law, Elayne and Dean Bice of Johnston, at a birthday party honoring Lorna Fogue of Des Moines. Lorna was 95 years old on Feb. 19 and her children hosted the party for their mother. Lorna is a cousin of Jean and Elayne’s late mother, Hope Darling. Jean visited her aunt Virginia Siglin of Waukee on the way out of town. Virginia was nursing a cold and couldn’t attend the party for her cousin. The women are the same age until Virginia turns 96 in May. Their fathers were brothers and they grew up together near Woodward.
