News in and around Rippey: Rippey is ready for the BRR riders on Saturday, Feb. 7.

1992 BRR in RippeyPlans are under way for the 38th annual Bike Ride to Rippey.  The Lions Club will be serving their hot beef sundaes, youth group their potato bar plus other goodies, and the fire department is hoping for thirsty riders.

Gathering the news usually depends on going to church to see if anyone has anything to add. The storm prevented that, so I found some old Globe Free Press papers upstairs that I have saved over the years.  (I thought I was going to make my four children a scrapbook for their graduations.)  I pulled out the 10 years’ worth of February editions that had Velda’s Varieties in them.  Velda’s views of BRR made me smile.  In 1988, the 11th,  riders braved the zero degree temperatures and the -30 degree wind chill.  That year there were 420 registered, but many others joined the ride.  Velda wrote: In keeping with the election year, last year’s Superman was transformed in Uncle Sam for this year’s ride.  A plus for the organizers of BRR, national news attention was given the ride because of the appearance of presidential hopeful Bruce Babbitt and his wife, Hattie, riding in the brisk temperatures.  This reporter is not sure that riding a bicycle in -30 degrees wind chill helps to make anyone credible as a presidential candidate.  Other presidential hopefuls in Iowa that day were playing golf in the skywalks in Des Moines and keeping company with actor Richard Gere.”

Whatever the weather, the riders will be welcomed by the Rippey folks.  You don’t have to be a rider to enjoy the day, visiting with the riders, enjoying the sights, as well as the food and refreshments available.
