Churdan library raising funds for expansion

The Churdan Public Library is rolling out a building renovation plan and fundraising effort with the theme “Expanding Our World!”

Churdan libraryAccording to library director Shari Minnehan, the library has outgrown its space. Since the last expansion in 1980, the role as “just a library” has changed. The number of services offered to patrons has greatly expanded beyond books: from computers to e-readers, from a safe place for children after school to providing a place for patrons of all ages to gather daily throughout the year.

The library board and staff have researched options over the past year and is in the middle stages of working with an architect. The board proposes a 30’ X 36’ (1,080 square feet) addition to the north (the rear) of the building. Upgrades to the existing building are also needed including new flooring, shelving, and different utilization of space.

The library needs the help of patrons and friends. Funds needed for the upgrades and expansion are substantial. Donations will be used as matching funds for grants. All donations are tax deductible.

“Together we will provide a more spacious, activity filled, accessible building for the Churdan community. Please consider the future of the community and be generous,” a library spokesperson said.

A fundraising campaign will begin at Christmas open houses Saturdays, Dec. 14 and 21, starting at 8:30 am. The open houses will include a silent auction, a drawing for an e-reader/tablet, and visits from Santa. Bids will be accepted on the silent auction items during the week as well.
