The Jefferson fire department is still tweaking the grain bin rescue equipment it purchased late in the summer. The modular tube has been powder coated to reduce friction as it’s pushed down into corn, and the firemen are considering how to push it down mechanically without also increasing pressure on the person they’re trying to rescue.
An anonymous donor made the first contribution to the purchase, and Home State Bank, Peoples Trust & Savings Bank and West Central Coop also made donations.
Several members of the Jefferson fire department participated in training conducted at no charge by the Fire Service Training Bureau in Rippey last August. The Rippey and Churdan fire departments also have grain bin rescue equipment.
Pictured with the equipment are (from left) Chris Nation of West Central Coop, Chad Leighty of Peoples Trust & Savings Bank, Jefferson fire chief Randy Love, and John Michael Sawhill of Home State Bank.
Also, members of the Jefferson fire department and the Grand Junction fire department visited Greene County elementary Friday, Oct. 10, as part of Fire Prevention Week. Firemen visit every year to show children their gear, hoping they’ll be less afraid should firemen need to come into their house in an emergency. The children all have a chance to spray a fire house.
