Middle school sports, updated Oct. 13

Volleyball- The Greene County eighth grade volleyball team finished its season with a match in Nevada Oct. 13. The girls won three of eight games played.

Three squads played with scores as follows: A, 8-21, 9-21, 16-21; B, 21-18, 10-21, 15-21; and C, 23-21, 21-15.

Top servers were Gina Brown at 27/28, 96 percent with eight aces; Morrgan Zmolek, 9/10, 90 percent; and Brittney Daniel, 23/26, 88 percent with 16 aces. Coach Teresa Green said that serving continues to be one of the team’s biggest areas of improvement. She thanked parents for their support during the season.

For the season game records for each squad were: A, 3-23; B, 4-22; C, 9-7; and D, 0-2.

Cross-country- The middle school cross-country runners finished their season at the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference meet in Ames in cold, wet conditions Monday, Oct. 13. The girls team finished seventh out of nine teams, and the boys team finished ninth out of nine teams.

Top finisher among Greene County girls was seventh grader Bailey Cunningham in 20th place with a time of 15:25. Other runners, in alphabetical order, were Maya Andersen, 93rd, 20:44; Sophia Ausberger, 71st, 18:16; Izzy Bravard, 31st, 15:58; Megan Doran, 66th, 18:04; Melanie Doran, 24th, 15:49; Ashlee Harmeyer, 64th, 17:48; Linsey Kitt, 102nd, 23:22; Kassie Lamoureux, 60th, 17:35; Kirsten Lamoureux, 79th, 18:50; and Tieryn Tucker, 65, 17:57.

Seventh grader Spencer Whipple paced the Greene County boys, finishing in 57th place with a time of 14:59. Other runners, in alphabetical order, were Arthur Bardole, 95th, 18:30; Cael Fisher, 69th, 15:46; Cody Gilbertson, 105th, 23:18; and Brian Hardaway, 62nd, 15:26.

Coach Gerry Stein thanked the entire team, as well as family and friends for supporting them. He particularly thanked eighth graders Arthur Bardole, Melanie Doran, Cody Gilbertson, Linsey Kitt and Emma Schroeder (who did not run Monday due to injury). “I could always count on them for positive leadership. They were out for cross-country both years of middle school. I appreciate their commitment to ur team over two seasons,” Stein said.

Volleyball- The eighth grade volleyball team traveled to Gilbert Oct. 9 and returned home with four wins and four losses.  The team met its season goal of serving 80 percent or better with the best serving to date.

Three squads played with the following scores: A, 17-21, 19-21, 21-9; B, 20-22, 21-12, 17-21; and C, 21-12, 21-11.

Fallon Heater served 8/8, 100 percent, with two aces. Other top scorers reported by coach Teresa Green were Allison Dudley, 9/10, 90 percent, three aces; Samantha Behne, 17/19, 89 percent, eight aces; Brittney Daniel, 8/9, 89 percent; Morrgan Zmolek, 7/8, 88 percent; Janelle Brophy, 12/14, 86 percent, seven ages; Gina Brown, 12/144, 86 percent, three aces; and Serenity blair, 5/6, 83 percent, one ac.

Cross-country- The Greene County middle school cross-country team ran at the South Central Calhoun Invitational in Lake City Oct. 7. Seventh grader Bailey Cunningham won the girls race with a time of 14:30. Other girls placing in the top half of the race were Melanie Doran in ninth place in 16:01, Izzy Bravard in 11th place in 17:58, and Tieryn Tucker in 27th place in 17:50.

Spencer Whipple had the fastest time for Greene County boys, placing sixth in 14:53. Other boys placing in the top half were Brian Hardaway, eight place, 15;02, and Cael Fisher, 21st place, 15:59.

No team scores were kept.

Volleyball- The Greene County eighth grade volleyball team hosted North Polk at the Greene County Community Center Thursday, Oct. 2. The girls won three games and lost five.

Three squads played  with the following results: A, 13-21, 12-21, 8-21; B, 12-21, 18-21, 23-21; and C, 21-17, 21-17.

Three girls served at 100 percent: Kylie Angell, 13/13 with two aces; Gina Brown, 8/8 with one ace; and Morrgan Zmolek, 8/8. Fallon Heater served at 80 percent, 8/10, with two aces. The Rams A squad served at 83 percent the first game and then served at 100 percent in games two and three.

“Our athletes continue to improve their serving and their overall court play,” coach Teresa Green said.
