Money Talk series returns to Greene County

th9PTQFOXXAn ISU Extension and Outreach financial management course will begin in early October for individuals and couples interested in taking charge of their money.

The Money Talk program, a 5-course series by Greene County Extension, will be held on Mondays beginning Oct. 6 and running through Nov. 3 at the Greene County Extension office meeting room.  Sessions will be from 6 to 8 pm, instructed by ISU Extension and Outreach family finance program specialist Ruth Freeman.  Local experts will also be present at each meeting to contribute and help answer specific questions.
“Whatever you want from your money – a house, financial security when you retire, college for your children, or something else – this program is a great general financial course for everyone,” said Sue Richardson, county families coordinator for Greene County Extension.

A local steering committee of eight volunteers are helping with planning the program.  The volunteers include Tanya Betts, Dean Dozier, Sarah Erickson, Pat Miller, David Morain, Pam Olerich, Omega Sang, and Mavis Sawhill.  Past Money Talk series have been held in 2004, 2005, and 2012.

Session topics include financial basics (setting financial goals and planning your spending), insurance basics, investing basics (stocks, bonds, mutual funds), retirement realities, and when life changes (wills, estate planning, trusts, divorce, widowhood, marriage, remarriage).

Local experts who will assist with the various classes include Pat Miller, Rose Stoline, Dean Dozier, and David Morain.

Registration costs is $30 per participant or $40 for a couple.  The fee includes the 192-page workbook and all handouts (couples will share materials).  A light meal will also be served at the first session.  The fees for service will be used to off-set direct expenses to support the Greene County Families Extension program.

The cost of the class is reduced from the usual $75 per person thanks to several local sponsors, including Community State Bank, Edward Jones, Home State Bank, Peoples Trust and Savings Banks, Wells Fargo Bank, and Greene County Extension.

To register, contact the ISU Extension and Outreach – Greene County office at 515-386-2138 by Oct. 1 to guarantee a seat.  Registration may be accepted after that date if seats are open.  You may also email srichard@iastate.edu to learn more or to register.   For more information about families and human sciences programming by Greene County Extension, visit www.extension.iastate.edu/greene
