4-H news

The Greenbrier 4-H club kicked off the new year with a meeting on Jan. 13 in Clover Hall at the Greene County Fairgrounds. The gathering started with a roll call introducing the new members of Walker Barrett, Wyatt Christensen, Logan Gierstorf, Caitlin Hawkins, Destiny Hofbauer, Niyah Hoyt, Brecken Klauer, Chase McDonough, Cody Pope, and Tristan Woodley.

Members received their annual programs for the year, and president Aden Bardole reminded everyone of the important rule of attending five meetings and doing one presentation in the year to be able to participate and show projects at the county fair. Young leader Autumn Barrett announced that the county 4-H Young Leader group will again offer chocolate covered strawberries available in February for a fundraiser.

Leader Linda Hedges gave an overview of the IGNITE the Spirit community service program where the Greenbrier club handed out food donated by the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation in cooperation with Iowa Select Farms for an operation Christmas meal for those in need. Pork loins were picked up and food for a meal was packaged and then distributed with the pork loins at the Food Pantry.  The Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation operates unique programs and projects that provide hunger relief to struggling Iowa families, shows gratitude to members of the Armed Services and strengthens efforts to find a cure for childhood cancers while improving the quality of life for impacted families.

Emma and Amber Stephenson shared with the club their experiences learning to wrestle, while Elaina Stephenson explained the art of chicken showmanship by sharing her experiences from the Greene County and Iowa State Fair winning showmanship classes. President Bardole presented a very important message to the club warning about the dangers of social media. The club spent time with getting to know you activities before the three Stephensons served refreshments. Greenbrier’s next meeting will be Monday, Feb. 9, at 7 pm in Clover Hall.
