Monarch tagging program in GJ Sunday

Carla Hilgenberg has been tagging monarch butterflies through the Monarch Watch program for 28 years. She will discuss her work with the program on Sunday, Sept. 14, at 2 pm in Grand Junction.

Hilgenberg, director of the Bayard public library, will present her program at the new shelter house built on the former site of the East Greene High School on 12th St S. in Grand Junction. She will discuss the migration process of monarch butterflies from Iowa to Mexico, why scientists tag monarchs, and what we can all do to help support the butterflies.

The program is sponsored by the Grand Junction public library. Both children and adults are encouraged to attend the event, which is open to the public at no charge. Refreshments will be served at the shelter house next to the playground and sports court on the former school site. Also on the property is the Rain Garden, which is supported by the Naked Ladies Garden Club and city of Grand Junction, and across the street is the iconic Dutton Memorial Ball Park. “This will be a great event for families and a terrific way to show off our wonderful new shelter house project,” says Alan Robinson, director of Grand Junction public library. “The playground and sports court are a real destination for area kids, so it is great to now have a terrific new shelter house with an enclosed portion added to the property.”
