Beekeeper Jeff Pudenz, who lives west of Churdan, will tell attendees “All About Honey Bees” at a Greene County IA Historical Society program at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, also west of Churdan, on Sept. 5.
The event begins with a noon lunch, followed by the free program at 12:45 pm in the nave of the church.
Pudenz has eight bee hives, each housing 80- to 200,000 bees. Each hive has a queen, who is serviced and cared for by male drone bees. A hive is also home to worker bees, all females.
He’ll explain how bees produce honey, and how he harvests their sweet product, and how important the little buzzers are to food production and Mother Nature. He’ll also bring along his bee equipment.
St. Patrick, the first Catholic parish in Greene County, was established in 1872, The current church is located at 449 E Ave, just north of 140th St. It is considered one of the best examples of Romanesque Revival styles in Greene County.
The noon lunch, prepared by members of the St. Patrick’s preservation committee, costs $12 ,all of which goes to the committee for it’s efforts to preserve the church. RSVP by Tuesday, Sept. 2, to get a seat at the table. Call a History Society community contact, or 515-386-4408.
