Rams baseball has week of close games

The Greene County Rams baseball team had a highly competitive week of play last week.

While the Rams were unable to get a win, all the games were close. They were a 5-2 loss to South Hamilton, a 6-5 loss to Winterset, a 13-6 loss to Perry, and an 8-5 loss to Grand View Christian.

Against South Hamilton, the Rams struggled to capitalize on hits as they had four during the game but only plated two runners.

Crew Conner led the team with two hits, while Gavyn Winters and Lane Fields had one apiece. Isaac Carman and Gavyn Winters each had an RBI. Crew Conner pitched the entire game, allowing 10 hits and five runs, striking out 11 batters.

Against Winterset, the game was extremely competitive. Each team was held scoreless through three innings, but the Rams scored one in the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead heading into the fifth inning. The Rams scored three more runs in the fifth inning, while the Huskies put up just one. The Rams held a 4-1 lead going into the sixth inning. The bats came alive for the Huskies in the sixth inning plating four runners, while the Rams added one more to make it 5-5 heading into the seventh. The Huskies would walk score one run in the seventh to take the win.

Crew Conner led the team in hits with three, Isaac Carman, Noah Hinote, Lane Fields, Jaron Jacobs, Nathan Towers, and Gavyn Winters each had one. Noah Hinote had two RBIs, while Crew Conner, Nathan Towers, and Gavyn Winters each had one. Nathan Towers pitched most of the game, allowing six hits and four runs, striking out three batters. Camden Jacobs allowed two hits and two runs, striking out one batter.

Against Perry, the Rams hit the ball well with eight hits but only managed six runs.

Jaron Jacobs, and Crew Conner each had two hits, while Isaac Carman and Teagan Chisholm each had one. Isaac Carman and Crew Conner each had an RBI. Teagan Chisholm pitched most of the game, allowing four hits and six runs, striking out two batters. Gavyn Winters allowed four hits and seven runs, striking out one batter, and Noah Hinote allowed one hit, and struck out a batter.

Against the Thunder, the Rams held a 5-3 advantage heading into the fifth inning. The Thunder would score three in the sixth inning and two in the seventh to ice the game.

Nathan Towers led the team with two hits, while Lane Fields and Isaac Carman each had one. Isaac Carman and Nathan Towers each had two RBIs, and Lane Fields had one. Noah Hinote pitched most of the game, allowing eight hits and eight runs, striking out four batters. Camden Jacobs also spent time on the mound.

The Rams were competitive in each game they played last week and can take away plenty of positives to build on through the remainder of the season.

This week, the Rams were expected to face Perry on Monday, PCM on Wednesday, and Nevada on Friday. The extended calendar has them facing Roland-Story on June 23, Manson-NW Webster on June 24, Saydel on June 25, and Carroll on June 27.

This week’s Rams Baseball Player of the Week is Crew Conner. Crew notched seven hits and two RBIs on five singles and two doubles. He also was credited with one stolen base and struck out 11 batters from the mound.
