Archery contest proposed for Squirrel Hollow park

The Friends of Greene County IA Parks plans to inaugurate an annual archery target-shooting competition. The Friends group formed as a non-profit 501(c)3 organization within the past year with a goal of supporting the county parks.

Friends board member Cheryl Robson at the April 7 county supervisors meeting requested $4,000 of the total project cost of $7,700 to purchase 3-dimensional targets of deer, raccoon, possums and other animals. The targets would be set up at various locations at Squirrel Hollow park as a fundraiser with a goal of hosting a competitive event. Proceeds would support various parks projects.

The structures would not be permanent at Squirrel Hollow. The targets would be usable for several years.

Robson said county naturalist Jacob Fernholz is working with the county schools on outdoor activities, and that the targets could be used for species identification, lessons on habitat, and more. The targets would be reusable.

The funds were requested from the supervisors’ Dreyfus funds. That fund is depleted for the current fiscal year, but there’s about $10,000 in the fund for the next fiscal year. The supervisors approved $3,600 for the Friends of Greene County Parks for the project.
