Supervisors hire veterans affairs administrator, promote clerk to deputy recorder

Billie Johnson-Daves will be the Greene Country veterans affairs administrator and general assistance manager, filling the position vacated when Mike Bierl retired in January. She will begin work March. 31.

Johnson-Daves will work part-time for a wage of $22.50 per hour until she completes federal training and a background check. Her wage will increase to $25 at that time. The job title has been changed from veterans affairs officer, as Johnson-Daves is not herself a veteran.

Her hiring was approved by the county supervisors at their regular meeting March 17.

In another personnel matter, the supervisors approved a deputy position in county recorder Deb McDonald’s office. The deputy will be paid 65.5 percent of the recorder’s wage.

Katie Fisher was appointed as deputy recorder. Fisher was hired in the recorder’s office  six months ago after the retirement of Maralie Ruth. Fisher’s annual wage will be $50,460.57.

County attorney Thomas Laehn reported he has worked with drainage clerk Michelle Fields concerning drainage work needed within the Union Pacific right-of-way east of Scranton. Laehn served U-P notice to complete the repair in July. The county now has the legal right to complete the repairs and bill the railroad. “We’ve followed the Code (of Iowa) to the letter,” Laehn told the supervisors.

County engineer Wade Weiss advised Laehn and the supervisors to be very cautious about who works on the project.

Laehn also told the supervisors that Paton-Churdan senior Grace Cullum has volunteered in his office, working through a list of 250 court cases dating back to 1900 in which there is outstanding victim restitution dating back to 1900. Of those cases, Laehn intends to initiate contempt actions in approximately 70 of them. Laehn is also assisting Weiss in updating all lease agreements for county-owned property that is being farmed.
