Calling all Greene County poets and poetry lovers
April is National Poetry Month, and local poets are invited to read their verses at the Greene County Historical Museum on Saturday, April 5.
The word “poet” derives from a Greek word meaning “maker” or “creator.”
The public is invited to the free program, which begins at 2 pm, to listen to the compositions Greene County’s local creators and makers of poetry have wrought. The event is a joint production of the Community Players of Greene County and the Historical Society.
All poets with ties to Greene County are invited to present their works at the program. Call Tori Riley, 515-370-3087, to assure a spot. Or just show up.
“I’ve heard there’s a new crop of poets in Greene County, thanks to the Jefferson public library’s ‘Ink’ writers’ program,” said Riley. “We hope the poets in the group will share their verses…rhyming or blank…with us.”
The Academy of American Poets iniatiated the month-long celebration of rhymes and blank verse in 1996 to encourage support for American poetry and poets and the reading and writing of poetry.
“We’re doing our part to keep poetry alive and thriving here in Greene County,” Riley said.
