The quote above was sent to me by a Jefferson friend, and I immediately thought of a column I wrote a couple of weeks ago that was about my life as an elder rather than my usual political comment; and how I felt when I read it in print in this newspaper. I was horrified at the dullness of it.
So, I return to political contrariness, thank you, Anne Tyler, and thank you, my friend Chris.

I cannot believe that most of the Republicans in the U.S. Senate, and now and then a few Democratic Senators, can vote for people to take over as heads of federal agencies when these candidates are inept, unqualified, ill-spoken and in general a joke, if not dangerous; even the best of them, who is Marco Rubio.
They have been elected to the Senate as stand-ins for the rest of us OF-BY-and-FOR citizens because as a country we are too populated to all show up at the Capitol to cast our vote. THEY ARE US. What a blithering shame we fell for them and actually cast our vote their way. That they “speak” for us, “act” for us, never do what we say shames me.
And we pay them! We even give them stamp money to send mail to us about what they’re doing — usually, at least with my Senators, about things that have nothing to do with me or the rest of the people they represent; (if in fact they contact me at all, no matter how many times a week I contact them).
What do they think they’re getting away with? Do they believe they’re acting invisibly? Do they believe we’re too dim to understand what they’re doing and more to the point, not doing? Do they simply give not a damn about their elected job description, which mean us?
More interestingly – and gigantically more unbelievably — what do they think it’s going to be like living in a dictatorship/oligarchy/strong-man leadership/totalitarian/absolutist/potentate/arbitrarian/domineering-arrogant-terrorist Fascist Tyrant!
Do they really believe they’re important enough to the Navel-Gazer-in-Chief that they will be among the blessed In-Group once we no longer have a Constitution?
Hah!
They might be wise to think deeply, after they have looked up the word integrity, into a more detailed look at their future.
