After their past week of games, the Greene County Rams girls basketball team knows where they will be heading for the first round of the postseason.
Last week featured two games against Heart of Iowa Conference opponents for the Rams girls, and they fell in both games. The Rams faced Saydel Feb. 4 and lost 69-21, and then West Marshall on Feb. 7, falling 66-24.
The Rams got down early in their game against Saydel, heading into halftime down 41-13. The Rams were again outscored in the second half of the game by a margin of 28-8 as the Rams had to leave Saydel High School with a loss.
Makenna Ebersole continued her impressive sophomore campaign with another double-double as she led the team in points with 12 and 11 rebounds. Kaycee Pittman had four points, Autumn Barrett and Jennifer Robbins each had two, and Sara Morlan had one.
While the Rams did lose the game, they showed improvement against Saydel, as the first time they played this year ended in a 51-5 loss for the Rams.
In their second game of the week against a tough West Marshall Trojans squad, the Trojans scored 20 or more points in each quarter except for the fourth. The Rams got after the ball as they netted 10 steals, and they had four blocks, which they’ve excelled at all year.
Ebersole again led the team with another double-double as she had team highs in points with 14 and rebounds with 13. Morlan had a good game with 10 points and Ebersole had the team’s four blocks to her credit.
With no seniors on the team, the Ram girls have shown improvement as the season has progressed and players gain more experience.
No matter what happens at the end of this year, they have shown remarkable improvement from the beginning of the season to now. Multiple young players have stepped up into prominent roles this season and have shown the moment isn’t too big for them.
As a whole, Ebersole, Kaycee Pittman, Sara Morlan, Jennifer Robbins, Leah McCormick, Faith Jaimes-Diaz, Autumn Barrett, Natalie Wright and Rylee Mowrer have shown immense fight in each game they’ve played in and will finish this season out strong.
Through 20 games, the Ram girls are winless, but they do know where they will be headed for the first round of the postseason. They will head to Cherokee Washington High School to face the 18-3 Braves Saturday, Feb. 15, at 7 pm in a Class 3A Region 5 game.
The winner of this game will move on to face the winner of the game between the Kuemper Catholic Knights and Missouri Valley.
The Rams will also have two other games this week as they were expected to take on the Southeast Valley Jaguars on Monday and then the South Hamilton Hawks on Tuesday before their first round of postseason action this weekend.
