The Greene County Rams wrestling team had an extremely successful week this past week.
The Rams closed the week at the 24-team Charger Invitational in Guthrie Center Saturday, Feb. 1. The Rams placed fifth with 160.5 points. Southeast Polk finished first with 237.5 points.
The Rams crowned three champions during the event. The first champion spot was Brennan Jacobs at 106 pounds. Jacobs received a bye in round one, a bye in round two, pinned Colton Hering of Riverside in round three, pinned Keaton Wittrock of Manson-NW Webster in the semifinals, and won an 8-0 major decision over Truman Hogen of Central Springs in the first place match.
The second champion was Brent Dennhardt at 157 pounds. He pinned Oliver Riehl of Southeast Valley in round one. He pinned Derek Raasch of Nodaway Valley in round two, and then pinned Ethan Bauer of Coon Rapids-Bayard in the quarterfinals. Dennhardt earned a 19-2 technical fall in the semifinals over Caden Gibbons from Central Springs, and won by a 16–0 technical fall over Zane Mullenix of Pleasantville in the first place match.
The third champion was Degan Miller at 165 pounds. He started the day pinning Brodey Laughman of Southeast Valley in the first round, and then pinned Jake Carroll of Woodward-Granger in the second round. He won by a 17-0 technical fall over Angel Martinez of AC/GC in the quarterfinal round, won an 11-5 decision over Jaxon Edwards from Central Springs in the semifinals, and won a 10-3 decision over Jett Rose from Riverside in the first place match.
The rest of the wrestlers also placed well; Jaron Jacobs placed third at 116 pounds, Gavyn Winters placed sixth at 120 pounds, and Marcus Ball placed fourth at 215 pounds.
The Rams opened the week Jan. 28 with a triangular against CAM and Manson-NW Webster, going 1-1 in duals. The Rams won against CAM 35-0 but fell to Manson-NW Webster 54-23.
Against CAM, Marcus Ball earned a win by forfeit; Brennan Jacobs earned a 17-2 technical fall victory over Reilly Becker, Kole Johnson and Jaron Jacobs won by forfeit, Crew Conner won by fall over Kegan Croghan, and Brent Dennhardt won by forfeit.
In their dual against Manson-NW Webster, Dennhardt won over Tegan Thoma by fall, Brennan Jacobs won over Keaton Wittrock by fall, Jaron Jacobs won over Kale Kraft by an 18-2 technical fall, and Conner won over Rylan Crouse by fall.
This week the Ram wrestlers have some time off as they don’t have anything on the schedule, but they will return to the mats on Feb. 11 when they welcome Woodward-Granger and Webster City to Jefferson for the last duals of the regular season.
After that, the Rams will prepare for the Class 2A District Tournament in Humboldt, which will take place Feb. 15, and then the State Tournament will be Feb. 19-22 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
