Greene County district court, week ending Jan. 24

In Greene County district court Michael James Wagoner, 42, of Jefferson was sentenced Jan. 17 to one year in jail after he pleaded guilty to a charge of domestic abuse assault- serious, amended from domestic abuse assault of pregnant person with intent to inflict serious injury. All but 90 days of the jail term was suspended. He was also sentenced to one year in jail after he pleaded guilty to a charge of interference with official acts, amended from interference with official acts- dangerous weapon. All but 10 days of that jail sentence were suspended, with the two sentences consecutive. He was placed on probation to the Iowa Department of Correctional Services for two years and must complete an Iowa domestic abuse program. A judgment for a $430 fine with a $64.50 surcharge was entered on each charge. He must pay a domestic abuse surcharge of $90, restitution not to exceed $500 for his court appointed attorney’s fees and $180 court costs. A charge of child endangerment was dismissed. Jessie James Sanders, 22, of Scranton was sentenced Jan. 21 to 10 years in prison after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of arson- second degree. The prison term is consecutive to the term in another Greene County case. Both terms were suspended and he was placed on probation to the Iowa Department of Correctional Services for three years. He is to reside in a residential treatment facility and successfully complete treatment. He was fined $1,370 with a $205.50 surcharge. Court costs were $1,950.87. A charge in that case of use of explosive material/destructive device was dismissed. (Sentencing: Honorable Adria Kester)

In an unrelated case, Sanders was sentenced to five years in prison after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of willful injury causing serious injury. The prison term was suspended, but if he ever serves it, it will be consecutive to sentenced in the above case and two other cases. He was fined $1,025 with a $153.75 surcharge; both were suspended. The court found him unable to pay restitution for his court appointed attorney’s fees. A charge of trespass- injury or damage greater than $300 was dismissed. A charge in district court of driving while license barred was dismissed, as was a charge in magistrate court of criminal mischief- fifth degree. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Carter Eugene Fetters, 73, of Jefferson was sentenced Jan. 22 to five years in prison after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of possession of marijuana- third offense. The prison term was suspended and he was placed on probation to the Iowa Department of Correctional Services for three years. He must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete all recommendations at his own expense. He was fined $1,025 with a $153.75 surcharge. The court ruled he is unable to pay restitution for his court appointed attorney’s fees or court costs. A charge of unlawful manufacture, deliver or possession with intent to deliver marijuana not more than 50 kg was dismissed. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Luis Daniel Medina Cruz, 26, of Jefferson pleaded not guilty at arraignment to a charge of domestic abuse assault causing injury or mental illness. A trial date was set for April 8.

Cases were initiated in district court as follows: Leeroy Dominic Steadman III, 23, of Grand Junction, sex abuse- third degree- child victim; Jeremy Ernest Andrews, 36, of Scranton, driving while license barred; Ashley Marie Spaulding, 27, of Jefferson, possession of marijuana; Morgan Brittany Gill, 35, of Fort Dodge, possession of marijuana; Marcus Edward Hildebrand, 36, of Guthrie Center, possession of methamphetamine; Audrie Leiann Lawrence, 24, of Jefferson, possession of controlled substance- third or subsequent offense; and Roger Keith Ketchum Jr, 37, of Jefferson, harassment- second degree and interference with official acts causing bodily injury.
